Sad Little Men - I'll Be The Octopus
Lyric Sheet
All lyrics by Dusty York
1) FakeMouthRealTeeth
Trying for the last time to bring your wretched neighbors down to the radio hall
Culminating lights from the television, tied, they want it all, they want it all, they want to see you now
With calm men, with easy eyes
Climbing up the mast while they're sinking, like you always said there was no lower to go
Terrifying sights of the naked people running from your sons, they want it all, they want it all, they want to leave you now
With calm men, with easy eyes
Can you imitate the sound
I hate someone, but they hate everyone
A big mouth when you look at me
A fake smile full of real teeth
It's getting so old, we're getting so old
2) Shaking Walls
Sent from the others, I'll leave them all
I'll shake all the paper and off I go
Last time we hung around too long
A dance party 'til the sun at dawn
I see that coveted face I know
Melodies stream from the casio
Backsides across an open floor
Our mouths watering to see some more
And these are the signs we've been waiting for
One-winged angels and dinosaurs
They fly with us and they circle low
To watch over little things they own
Can you hear it? I hear it all
Soft, sweet moans through the hall
They're shaking walls, I'm taking down the things I need to know
Because later on they'll paint right over it all
Let's read along with these words you wrote
All about evil and intercourse
In, out, in, out and all the wrong
Times, places and the silver tongues
Break out the silverware in your homes
Because I'll eat your muscles, you'll eat my bones
We sat watching everyone in awe
And made fun of everyone thing we saw
They found me waiting for it, waiting for it
3) Hal
In a past life, I knew Hal
I saw, I heard, I stole it all
No one will know
Now I'm caught with Hal's little song in my heart
4) Steve McQueen
Your sisters bled all over me
I'm now siding with the young men, falling off
Bet low if they dressed me like Steve McQueen
I'd go tear some hearts out
Cold leather around a turtleneck
I'm still waking to the sound of my hero's call
He's with me as you run your fingers through
My blond, alpaca, stick-on chest hair
Let's spend hours in your arms
Unsaid hours in your arms
Wasted hours in your arms
But I'm holding it up
I sigh from the helium
It fills up my lungs
I'm high pitched for everyone
Let me tell you wretched things about him
Let you tell me wretched things about him
Let you tell me anything you have - I know now
5) I'll Be The Octopus
Facing the wall
Stuck in your mouth
But I saw what you were thinking yesterday
And I see that it's something else today
My tentacled arms
Wrapping you up
But I saw what you were feeling yesterday
And I see that it's something else today
Kept by a clock
But my timing was fine
Ashamed of your 'glass
It sways just for my eyes
We're fighting, you're laughing, I'm wrapping you up
6) Toll Bridges And Heart Attacks
Go on, give all your brides away
Go on and let them outside
It's lazy through the house today
They have no other lives
You laugh while I am hanging up
Bells to go with our scene
The city is always calm for us
The neon is in our veins
There's a creature inside your man
He shakes at the sight of me
His hands are made for burying
And he calls you his own
Here he waits for us to clear a room
For his pines and his hard, wooden arteries
Over, under and in between
It's his life in the sun
And what of his home, when I'm back on?
Because toll bridges and heart attacks are
Where I come from
Railroads and charlatans
Burnouts and humble men
It's where I see you from
It's what you are made of
7) Drakkar Noir
The wingman always leaves alone
He pulls the tension from the fight
I'm so tall
You're too far
I am just what you're dreaming of
I'll walk up to you smelling like
Drakkar Noir
Won't you like to come to know
A look and smell should say it all
There's no time
I don't mind
I'm learning how to please you more
By doing what I see in porn
You're such a lovely one
Before I set out to find you
I ready myself oh so well
I bath myself in the finest of odors
And I make sure everyone can tell
Ten sprays for the contours of your hips
Ten more for the looks I stole
I think you can tell by the shape of my haircut
I'm the kind that you're going to want to know
You're such a lovely one
I'll buy you time
Drakkar Noir
8) Sequin Glow
I see you writhing with your hands bound sideways
I'd be there with you to talk, talk idly
They found your picture with your sad face hiding
Numbers on elevators - down down down
You said be quiet, but I whispered to you lightly
Lilting, I said it to you anyways
We sat for hours while they searched through our armaments
Wide-eyed the sargeant says "I got 'em now"
Sequin glow
We must go
Sequin glow
We must show
Our nice friends, wearing nothing, never saying no
To what we will ask
9) These Talented Hours
Calm I've come to know
We will lay our hands on
Noises off
As we count
These talented hours
Where we can be
Much better than we know
And much more than I can see
New and soft
I stand up
We go down
Now we're off
Better now
As we count
Don't follow them
Don't follow me
You won't like where we're going
Or what you will see
I've been around
I've been all over you
Now I can leave
10) Heavy Metal Soldiers (pass the nunchucks)
No time for your styles
Make waves for the summer mends
I'll blend into my times
With fashions that accompany
I cut off my jeans
Or sanded holes at the knees
My hair is feathered and splayed
I tore off all my shirt sleeves
The killers make for some helpful friends to have around
Slack-eyed angels crowd around your house with good intentions
You tried to send us all along, you tried to rid your town
Nunchucks are swinging all around you tried but it was
too late now
Ride the lightning
Or some Maiden on my chest
High tops are dirty white
A metal soldier and I'm the best
11) Steve McQueen (Full Version)
Your sisters bled all over me
I'm now siding with the young men, falling off
Bet low if they dressed me like Steve McQueen
I'd go tear some hearts out
Charm, circa 1970
A worn cherry picker thrown out in the yard
Bring to me every sunburnt, scenic view
And I'll stop and tell you how I don't care
Let's spend hours in your arms
Unsaid hours in your arms
Wasted hours in your arms
But I'm holding it up
I sigh from the helium
It fills up my lungs
I'm high pitched for everyone
Cold leather around a turtleneck
I'm still waking to the sound of my hero's call
He's with me as you run your fingers through
My blond, alpaca, stick-on chest
Let me tell you wretched things about him
Let you tell me wretched things about him
Let you tell me anything you have - I know now
"Indie rock with great lyrics and vocals, bursting out of Portland, Oregon, with a fantastic sound. And apparently it’s just two guys. I guess when you’ve got an amazing drummer, you can sound big with just a little band.
I’m truly lovin’ this."
- Berkeley Place Blog
"...I will go ahead and say that it is probably one of the most interesting and unique albums I’ve heard this year. And I know I’ve used this phrase before, regarding that word ‘unique’.. but, once again, I must reiterate the fact that ‘unique’ is a good word in this case..."
- Lovesound Magazine
"This is a very entertaining record, one that deserves to be heard by those unafraid to take the pop with the underground. It reflects a dedication to catchy songwriting that avoids the artistic trappings of appealing to the common denominator. "
- Kevin Sellers, Music Emissions
"From the openings moments I’ll Be The Octopus gets your head bobbing, and it does a good job of doing this throughout..."
- Kevin Kozel, Muzikreviews.com
Sad Little Men is the latest emergence from the new music hotbed of Portland, OR. It stemmed from the mind of former saxophonist turned vocalist/multi-intsrumentalist Dusty York, who spent many years releasing recordings from a multitude of artists on his own record label Diatic Records. After five releases of his own he abandoned the saxophone, as well as jazz and the record label, to pursue a career in the indie-pop realm.
After a two year hiatus from performing and recording, York teamed up with Los Angeles drummer Justin Roberts and formed Sad Little Men. They quickly recorded their debut album entitled 'I'll Be The Octopus' and proceeded to begin playing live, with Roberts leaving the group to be replaced by Dusty's cousin Aaron Linn.
Their style is an energetic, percussion oriented romp, with catchy rhythms and hooks that have York switching back and forth between guitar and piano, as well as handling all of the writing and vocal duties.
